Connemara is an area in western Co. Galway in the West of Ireland. It has a wide variety of habitats and ecosystems, and a rich history and pre-history.
It is here that Connemara marble, a beautiful and unique green stone, is found. Connemara marble is 700 million years old. It's hard to even get your head around that!
Working with such an ancient stone is a wonder - I love it! There's something truly magical about it. The beauty, richness and variety of the shades of green constantly delight me, and perfectly reflect the innumerable greens of the wild landscapes of the west of Ireland.
The Connemara archeologist Michael Gibbons reports that Connemara marble beads were traded or used as currency during the Bronze Age. I often use bronze when I'm working with the marble, which has been used in the making of adornments in Ireland for thousands of years, since the Bronze Age in fact!
This was the time when the Tuatha Dé Danann, the old gods of Ireland, still roamed the dense forests that covered the countryside. After the arrival of the Celts they moved underground and gradually became known as the Fairies, or 'na Daoine Maithe' (literally 'the Good People').
But whoever has been in the ascendance in Ireland Connemara marble has been valued for its unique and resplendent green beauty!
I feel very honoured to be able to work with it - to bring together its timeless qualities of Beauty, Strength and Grace with the simplicity of contemporary design.
