Carolyn Claire Mitchell is the designer and maker at Clew Bay Creations jewellery. She lives and works in a traditional cottage beside Clew Bay in western Co. Mayo, in a special place between Croagh Patrick (Ireland's Holy Mountain) and the sea. Clew Bay Creations is very literally a 'cottage industry'!
She is inspired by story, music, landscape, language and the ways in which they interconnect.
She works primarily with Connemara marble (known as 'Ireland's Gemstone), Sterling silver and Bronze.
Connemara marble is a traditional gift of friendship, loyalty and love.
It is ancient and represents the beauty and mystery of Ireland. The richness and variety of colour are astonishing. No two pieces are alike.
There is something truly magical about it.
It is one of the most gorgeous and rare marbles in the world and is only found here in the West.
It is an unbelievable 700 million years old!
A metamorphic rock composed of recrystallized carbonate minerals, most commonly calcite or dolomite. It was originally deposited near the end of the Precambrian era.
The spiral, found in many of Carolyn's designs, is a symbol of the cyclical nature of life and is an ancient and elemental pattern found throughout the world, including here in Ireland.
